National University of Singapore (NUS)

- In the 2024 QS World University Rankings, NUS is ranked 11th in the world and 1st in Asia!

Nanyang Technological University (NTU)
Founded on July 1, 1991, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has evolved into a globally recognized research-intensive university. It traces its roots back to the Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI), which was established in 1981 as part of the former Nanyang University. In 1991, NTI merged with the National Institute of Education, giving rise to the NTU we know today.
NTU is now ranked among the top 100 universities globally, thanks to its exceptional academic programs and groundbreaking research.
- In the 2024 QS World University Rankings, NTU is ranked 26th in the world and 4th in Asia!

This is just a glimpse of the exciting admission results we’re seeing! Follow us for more updates and first-hand information on university admissions in Singapore.
As the 2024 application cycle for Singapore’s prestigious universities comes to an end, NUS and NTU continue to attract top talent. Both universities recently hosted open days—NUS on March 9, 2024, and NTU on March 2, 2024—to offer valuable insights and guidance to prospective students. With applications closing on March 19, 2024, this article provides a comprehensive look at the latest updates for those applying to the 2025-26 academic year.
Admissions Events at NUS and NTU: What You Need to Know
While Singapore may not hold large-scale college entrance exam fairs like China, its universities, including NUS and NTU, conduct open days to give students ample opportunity to learn more about the schools. These events were attended by a massive number of students, offering direct access to valuable information on application processes and student life.
One standout feature: unlike in many countries, the majority of attendees were students themselves rather than parents, reflecting an encouraging shift towards student independence in education decision-making.
Competition for NUS and NTU Admissions: Is It Tough?
NUS and NTU each receive around 30,000 applications annually, admitting approximately 6,000-7,000 students. While this sounds competitive, it’s worth noting that 30% of Singaporean students—based on an annual birth cohort of 40,000 (although declining)—gain entry into these top schools. Singaporean students can pursue admission not only through junior colleges (JC) but also via O-level examinations, providing multiple pathways to these universities.
Comparing this to the competition in China for top universities like 985 institutions, applying to NUS and NTU is relatively less intense. However, some majors are more competitive than others. For instance, medicine, law, computer science, and artificial intelligence are among the most sought-after courses.
Popular Courses and Admission Score Requirements
Aside from traditional fields like medicine and law, interdisciplinary courses like business analytics, big data, and economics have seen a surge in popularity at NUS and NTU. These programs typically require top-tier grades, with 90% of students in recent intakes achieving AAA/A grades.
NUS and NTU release detailed admission score data for various courses, showing the 90th and 10th percentile scores for previous intakes. This can serve as a helpful reference for applicants. Notably, starting in 2026, the University Admission Score (UAS) will change from 90 points to 70 points, and GP (General Paper) and PW (Project Work) will no longer be included. This change is expected to benefit international students, particularly those from China.
What Does This Mean for International Students?
NUS and NTU reserve about 10% of places for international students each year, ensuring a diverse student body. These international spots are highly competitive, with students vying for scholarships and tuition subsidies offered by Singapore’s universities and Ministry of Education. Therefore, it’s crucial for international applicants to stand out in their applications by meeting or exceeding the high standards set for local students.
Final Thoughts: The Purpose of Education
In conclusion, no matter where you choose to pursue your university education, it’s important to remember the broader purpose of education. As illustrated by the pyramid of educational goals, lifelong learning and adaptability are key to maintaining competitiveness in today’s world.
Mastering the Singapore International School Admission Test: A Path to Future Success
In Singapore, international schools attract parents and students with their diverse educational models and global perspectives. However, gaining entry into these schools can be challenging, with admission tests playing a key role in assessing a student’s adaptability and readiness. This article explores the importance of admission tests for international schools in Singapore and provides valuable strategies and guidance for parents and students.

What is the Singapore International School Admission Test?
The entrance test for Singapore’s international schools is a comprehensive assessment that goes beyond simple academics. It evaluates students’ academic levels, language skills, and adaptability. Schools use these tests to better understand students’ strengths and learning needs, allowing them to create personalized learning plans.
Test Content and Format
The content and format of the tests vary between schools, with many international schools using standardized international tests. Some common types include:
- iTEP Slate: A fast, online English proficiency test that assesses listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Widely recognized, iTEP Slate helps schools gauge a student’s English proficiency with precision.
- WIDA: This test measures communication and comprehension skills for students who use English as a second language, covering listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- CAT4: Designed by GL Education, this cognitive abilities test evaluates students’ potential in language comprehension, numerical reasoning, non-verbal thinking, and spatial awareness.
- MidYIS: Created by the UK’s CEM (Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring), MidYIS assesses secondary school students in subjects like math, English, and science to gauge their academic levels and potential.
The Importance of Test Results
Admission tests are a critical component of the school application process. Test results do more than provide a number—they determine whether students meet the school’s admission standards. Schools like UWCSEA, Dulwich College Singapore, Tanglin Trust, Australian International School, Canadian International School, and XCL World Academy place significant weight on these tests to evaluate students’ academic capabilities, language proficiency, and critical thinking skills.
For students aiming to enter prestigious international schools, excelling in the admission test is essential. A well-prepared student will have a stronger chance of being accepted, setting the stage for future academic success.

How to Prepare for the Entrance Test
To ensure success in these competitive exams, parents and students need a structured approach. Below is a recommended timeline and strategy:
- Understand the test content and format (2 months before the exam): Gather detailed information from the school to know what subjects will be tested.
- Develop a study plan (1-2 months before the exam): Create a study schedule covering all test subjects, and seek external tutoring if needed.
- Practice regularly (1 month before the exam): Practice problem-solving skills and take mock tests to improve test-taking strategies.
- Maintain a positive attitude (right before the exam): Encourage confidence and maintain calm to ensure the student performs their best on test day.
After the Entrance Test
After the test, schools may provide feedback or suggest remedial courses based on the student’s results. Ongoing collaboration between parents and schools is key to supporting students’ academic progress and helping them meet their full potential.
Curriculum Options at Singapore International Schools
International schools in Singapore offer a rich and diverse curriculum, preparing students for a global future. Popular programs include:
- International Baccalaureate (IB): Known for its focus on critical thinking and global perspectives.
- British GCSE/A-Level: A rigorous academic pathway emphasizing subject expertise and intellectual development.
- American AP (Advanced Placement): Offers practical, career-oriented learning experiences.
Each curriculum provides a unique path for students to explore and challenge themselves, helping them achieve academic success and personal growth.
Comprehensive English Support for Test Preparation
To help students excel in English proficiency and navigate the entrance tests, Mighty Edupath has partnered with experienced teachers from international schools. These teachers offer tailored guidance to strengthen students’ English skills, preparing them for both the test and the English-based learning environment at Singapore’s international schools.
Conclusion
The Singapore International School entrance test is a crucial step in a student’s academic journey. By understanding the test’s content and format, preparing diligently, and leveraging personalized learning plans, students can successfully navigate the test and secure a spot in their school of choice, paving the way for a bright future.
